The Wilson Creek Wilderness Area is part of the Pisgah National Forest located just south of Grandfather Mountain. On a map the wilderness area is south of the Blue Ridge Parkway north of Morganton and east of NC 181. This wilderness area is a relatively new addition to the National Wild and Scenic River System added on August 18, 2000. The headwaters to the area are just below Calloway Peak and stretch over 23 miles before reaching John’s River. There are 4.6 miles of Wild area; 2.9 miles of Scenic area; and 15.8 miles of Recreational area, but the designations are overlapping all over the area. The activities include hiking, backpacking, car camping, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and swimming.

There are a number of waterfalls and swimming holes all over the wilderness area as well as a huge network of trails for hiking and mountain biking. The trail system is excellent with most trailheads marked and most trails blazed. The Mountain-To-Sea Trail runs through the middle of the wilderness area heading north to Grandfather Mountain and west to Linville Gorge. There are plenty of backpacking campsites throughout the trail system with most of the trails giving you a challenging hike but not anything to strenuous. This is a great place to spend a few days backpacking in the summer with a lot of swimming holes to cool off in.

There is one campground on the southern end of the wilderness area called Mortimer Campground. It cost only $12 a night to camp here and can make a great starting off point to explore the area.
